THE BIGGER PICTURE: a celebration of stories

“You can’t pour from

an empty cup.

Remember to take care of yourself.

Have you ever heard the saying, “you can’t pour from an empty cup?”  Essentially, it means that in order for us to effectively take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves.  I know, sometimes that’s easier said than done, especially if you’re a busy working mum, trying to juggle kids, work, home, sport and all the ‘things’ we’re supposed to fit into our days.

And then add to that, starting up a small business and having to not only ‘know your stuff’ about your product, but also learn how to be the bookkeeper, the content creator, the admin assistant, all while having the guts to show your face and market yourself on social media.  It’s a lot.

Welcome to The Bigger Picture; a blog that is all about building NETWORK and CONNECTION.  Each month, I feature a woman in small business within my community with the sole purpose of showing support, building solidarity and sharing stories of passion.

I am so fortunate to be surrounded by incredible small businesses in the South West run by mums in their spare rooms or out in their gardens and they each have a unique story to be told; a BIGGER PICTURE to be discovered.

In today’s blog, we’re looking at a form of healthcare that is aimed at empowering self-care.  In this world that values hard work and productivity, it’s so important that we take the time for self-care because the simple fact is that you can’t give your best to others when you’re running on empty.

My feature for June is a local mum who is passionate about helping people feel good.  Please welcome the very lovely…

Modern Daye Naturopathy

Tell us about your business and what services you offer

I’m a qualified naturopath—basically a mix between a nutritionist and a herbalist—who works with diet and lifestyle to support overall health, wellbeing, and fertility. I take a holistic approach, meaning I look at the full picture to understand what’s really contributing to someone’s health concerns.

I specialise in women’s health, including pregnancy, postpartum, PCOS, endometriosis, and perimenopause. I also love supporting women with things like anxiety, poor sleep, low energy, and low immunity. My focus is always on creating realistic, personalised plans that help women feel good again.

Is there a story behind the name you chose?

Yes! It’s actually a play on my surname, but it also reflects how I practise. I’m really passionate about keeping naturopathy modern and evidence-based. I use up-to-date research, clinical tools, and testing where needed, rather than leaning into the more “woo-woo” practices that are sometimes associated with the industry.

Everything I recommend is either backed by research or has strong traditional use behind it.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Honestly, the results my clients get - it can be completely life-changing. Whether it’s having the energy to do the things you love again, falling pregnant, navigating motherhood, feeling nourished, finally sleeping well, calming anxiety, losing weight sustainably, or easing symptoms like PMS or hot flushes—these changes can mean everything to someone.

I’ve also been through my own health journey. Before seeing a naturopath, I was dealing with prediabetes, weight gain, acne, low energy, anxiety, and poor gut health. Getting answers (and results) changed my life, and that’s a big part of why I do what I do.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Definitely seeing results. There’s nothing better than watching someone get their confidence, and spark back.

I also really value that one of the core principles of naturopathy is “do no harm.” The treatments we use are generally gentle and well-tolerated, with far fewer side effects than many conventional options. It feels good to support the body in a way that works with it, not against it.

What do you offer your clients that no one else does?

A safe, non-judgmental space where you can just be yourself. Somewhere you can talk about the things you might not want to share with friends or family—a place to vent, be heard, and feel supported.

I also put a lot of time and care into every treatment plan. No two clients are the same, so no two plans are either. I combine diet, lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, and nutritional support based on what each person actually needs. Each plan ends up feeling really personal—like something thoughtfully put together just for you, not something off the shelf.

I’m constantly learning for my clients too. The science is always evolving, so I’m always researching and refining how I work to give them the best support possible.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt since starting your business?

I’ve realised that running a business in the health industry requires a lot more than just clinical knowledge. I’ve had to learn so much beyond naturopathy—things like marketing, business management, accounting, advertising, and even digital design. It’s been a steep learning curve for sure!

Putting myself out there on social media has also been a big leap. It doesn’t always feel comfortable, but it’s been such an important part of growing my business and connecting with the right people.

When Lauren reached out to me to help her with some branding images for her new business, I jumped at the chance.  She was so nervous and really uncertain about getting in front of the camera but we ended up having such fun together and the results are gorgeous!  You see, branding photos are not just portraits; they’re a series of images that help your brand feel real and lived in.  They’re little storytelling moments that help clients connect with not only you, but your product and your message.  They want to see the messy, the real, the relaxed, the fun, the knowledge; in other words, someone they can connect with.

Lauren’s calm energy and warmth radiates in these images.  She is a person who truly cares about her clients and rejuvenating their lives in a natural and holistic way.  Through her own life experiences, she is someone who embraces using natural and non-invasive therapies to empower the body’s self-healing, and honestly, isn’t that something we all need in our lives.
